Postdoctoral Researcher – Ultrafast Optics of Phase-Change Materials (338)

The Extreme Light Infrastructure ERIC (ELI ERIC) is the world’s largest and most advanced high-power laser research infrastructure. As an international user facility dedicated to multi-disciplinary science, ELI provides access to world-class high-power, high-repetition-rate laser systems and enables cutting-edge research, as well as breakthrough technological innovations. The ELI ERIC operates as a single multi-site organization with two complementary facilities specialized in different fields of research with extreme light: ELI Beamlines in Dolní Břežany (Czech Republic) and ELI ALPS in Szeged (Hungary).

ELI Beamlines Facility operates four cutting-edge high-power femtosecond laser systems reaching unprecedented intensities. The operational laser systems make unique femtosecond sources of X-rays and accelerated particles available to scientific users for pioneering research in physical, chemical, materials, life and medical sciences as well as physics of dense plasmas, warm dense matter, and laboratory astrophysics. The ELI Beamlines Facility employs over 350 researchers, engineers and other professionals from more than 38 countries.

In our team we have the following position available:

Postdoctoral Researcher – Ultrafast Optics of Phase-Change Materials (338)

The Department of Structural Dynamics at ELI Beamlines is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join TwinMetro, a Horizon Europe project selected for funding and expected to start on 1 January 2027, carried out together with Universidad de Cantabria (Spain) and Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Italy).

Expected starting date: 1 January 2027. Appointment is conditional upon signature of the TwinMetro Grant Agreement and confirmation of the project start date.

Job description:

  • Pump–probe and time-resolved spectroscopic ellipsometry experiments on phase-change materials
  • Development and validation of measurement protocols, including calibration routines and uncertainty budgets
  • Participation in inter-laboratory comparison exercises with the project partners
  • Development of data processing and analysis tools, and preparation of open, reusable datasets
  • Contribution to the relevant research activities of the Department within national and international collaborations

Requirements:

  • PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science or a related field. Highly motivated candidates at the end of their PhD are encouraged to apply.
  • Hands-on experience with optical spectroscopy or laser-based experiments
  • Comfort with data analysis and scientific programming (Python, Matlab, LabVIEW or similar)
  • Good networking and communication skills, capability to work in a team
  • A good knowledge of spoken and written English is necessary as the work environment is international
  • Experience with pump–probe techniques, spectroscopic ellipsometry, thin films or phase-change materials is an asset — but we are happy to train the right person

We offer:

  • The opportunity to contribute to a unique scientific project and to develop your own scientific profile in an interdisciplinary research field
  • Funded research stays with our project partners in Spain and Italy
  • Training in ultrafast metrology, sustainable materials design and open science
  • Career development opportunities
  • Competitive and motivating salary
  • 5 weeks of holidays and 6 days of personal leave
  • Dynamic and collaborative work environment in a highly motivated international research team
