The Department of Cell Biology at Charles University invites applications for the position of research group leader. The successful candidate will establish and lead an independent research group in bioinformatics within the department.
We are looking for an outstanding bioinformatician specialising in transcriptomics, multi-omics analyses or epigenomics. We particularly welcome candidates whose work can build on the department’s experimental expertise (https://natur.cuni.cz/biologie/katedry-a-pracoviste/katedra-bunecne-biologie) and develop collaborations with existing groups.

What we offer

  • Group funding. The department commits CZK 1,000,000 (approx. EUR 41,000) per year to this position, regardless of the outcome of grant applications. You will apply to the Charles University PRIMUS programme, which the department co-funds from this very contribution and which raises the group budget to CZK 3,000,000 (approx. EUR 124,000) per year for four years. To be frank: CZK 1,000,000 covers your own salary and the basic running costs of the group; only with CZK 3,000,000 can you hire people and build a team. Master’s students can join the group at any time and are not paid from the group budget.
  • Support with the PRIMUS application. You will be assigned a mentor as soon as your appointment is agreed; colleagues from the department and the faculty grants office will read and comment on your drafts, and we will cover a visit to Prague dedicated to preparing the application. The application is submitted in April 2027 and the result is known in August 2027.
  • Further funding and a higher salary. We support and help you with applications to external grant schemes that fund your research and can also increase your own pay.
  • Space for the group. Office and computing space for the group leader and two to three team members in the Viničná building, expanding as the group grows. The faculty is building the Albertov Campus, a modern interdisciplinary site where biologists, chemists and computer scientists will meet clinicians around biomedical research; it is expected to open in 2028.
  • Career prospects. An initial three-year tenure-track appointment. After securing PRIMUS funding — or another start-up grant of comparable scope, such as GAČR JUNIOR STAR — and following an evaluation of results achieved, the appointment is extended twice on a fixed-term basis; a permanent contract follows after a further evaluation, nine years from the start. If you do not obtain a start-up grant, the department’s contribution of CZK 1,000,000 (approx. EUR 41,000) per year continues for the duration of the initial appointment and you can apply again in the next call.
  • Salary. Base faculty salary of CZK 60,000 (approx. EUR 2,500) per month. It can be increased from grant funds to approximately CZK 90,000 (approx. EUR 3,700) per month. EUR amounts are approximate, based on the Czech National Bank exchange rate of 21 October 2026 (CZK 24.26 per EUR).
  • Teaching and programme development. The opportunity to help shape bioinformatics at Charles University, including the concept and direction of degree programmes in the field.
  • Mentoring. A structured mentoring programme for newly established groups, with a senior mentor assigned from the start.
  • Leadership development. Funded participation in the EMBO Laboratory Leadership Course.
  • Grant support. Targeted help with grant applications from colleagues in the department and the faculty grants office, including applications to PRIMUS, the ERC Starting Grant and other international schemes.
  • Computing infrastructure. Access to the computing and storage capacity of the Czech ELIXIR node, ELIXIR CZ: 3,000 CPU cores and tens of TB of storage. GPU capacity is available through MetaCentrum, in limited and shared form; groups whose work relies heavily on GPUs usually budget for their own hardware in grant applications.
  • Relocation support. Help with visa and residence permits and with finding housing, and funded Czech language courses.
  • Benefits. Five weeks of annual leave, paid sick days, a meal allowance and the faculty kindergarten Rybička. Full overview at natur.cuni.cz/zamestnanci/benefity-pro-zamestnance.
  • Prague. A safe, green and affordable European city with excellent public transport and an international community.

Who we are looking for

Requirements
  • A Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology or a related field.
  • Postdoctoral experience, ideally at least partly gained outside the country where the Ph.D. was obtained. We expect approximately two to six years.
  • Eligibility to apply for funding under the Charles University PRIMUS programme or a similar start-up scheme. PRIMUS is open to researchers within eight years of the award of their Ph.D.; maternity and parental leave, military service and long-term illness do not count towards this period.
  • A publication record appropriate to career stage, with a demonstrated leading role in key publications.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Experience in supervising students.
  • Independence, responsibility and reliability; the ability to collaborate.
  • The ambition to secure external funding and build a group on it. The department’s contribution covers you and basic running costs; everything else — postdocs, funded doctoral positions, your own hardware — comes from the grants you win.
Desirable
  • Experience in preparing grant applications as an author or co-author.
  • A track record in open and reproducible science — published software, documented pipelines, public datasets.
  • Experience in collaborating with experimental groups.

Teaching and language

The position is initially purely research-focused, but is expected to evolve into an academic position. You will therefore not teach at all during the first two years after joining, while you build your group. After that, you will become involved in teaching in the bioinformatics degree programmes.
Knowledge of Czech is not required, neither on arrival nor later. All  potential teaching associated later with this position can be delivered in English at all levels, including the bachelor’s level, as can student supervision, seminars and group meetings. The faculty offers Czech language courses for those who wish to take them.

Application requirements

Please send your application as a single PDF file. It must contain:
  1. a structured CV including a complete list of publications, briefly indicating your own contribution to key papers;
  2. a concise research statement of no more than three pages (references not included), outlining the research planned for the first five years and the resources it will require;
  3. a statement on your involvement in the teaching activities of the department and the development of bioinformatics degree programmes, of no more than one page;
  4. names and contact details of two referees whom we may approach for references. We will contact them only after notifying you in advance, and only for candidates invited to interview.

Selection process

  1. Shortlisting based on the submitted documents, carried out by a committee of the department’s group leaders and external experts.
  2. A short online interview of approximately 30 minutes with shortlisted candidates.
  3. A two-day on-site visit, which includes:
    • a public seminar of 45–50 minutes on past results, open to students and staff;
    • a chalk talk on future research plans for the department’s group leaders and invited external experts. This is an informal discussion without slides, in which the candidate expands on the submitted research statement and answers questions. We set aside approximately 90 to 120 minutes and do not cut the discussion short;
    • one-to-one meetings with group leaders, a meeting with the department’s doctoral students without group leaders present, a tour of the facilities and an informal dinner.
Travel and accommodation costs associated with the on-site visit are covered by the faculty.
Indicative timeline
  • Application deadline — 6 December 2026
  • Notification of shortlisting — December 2026
  • On-site interviews — January 2027
  • Decision — February 2027
  • PRIMUS application submission, with our support — April 2027
  • PRIMUS result — August 2027
  • Start — January 2028; an earlier start is possible by agreement, no earlier than September 2027
We will inform all candidates of the outcome of each round, whether or not they progress.
Applications are assessed on the quality and originality of previous research, the ambition and feasibility of the proposed programme, the potential to lead a group and secure competitive funding, and the contribution to teaching and to the life of the department.

Equal opportunities

Charles University is committed to equal opportunities in recruitment and holds the HR Excellence in Research Award. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates regardless of gender, age, nationality, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation or family situation. Career breaks — maternity and parental leave, caring responsibilities, long-term illness — are taken into account in the assessment; please indicate them in your CV.
Personal data provided in applications are processed solely for the purposes of this selection procedure in accordance with the GDPR and will be deleted once it is completed, unless agreed otherwise with you.
